Chapter Four

Roman didn't leave. Despite the forceful advice of the human woman, he couldn't possibly abandon his mate. Granted, he broke away from the premises of the Rowe mansion and made sure the sensors could no longer detect him, but he didn't return to his apartment like it would have perhaps been wiser.

Instead, he hid in the shadow of the buildings and waited. There was quite a lot of commotion inside for a while, to the point that Roman didn't think he could have stayed where he was if not for his new bond with Julian. Roman had felt Julian's emotions during their coupling, and it had been mind-melting. It also hadn't completely vanished after the fact, and even now, he could still sense echoes of Julian's feelings.

This told Roman Julian was, for the most part, well enough. Still, he did not leave.

His revelry lasted well into the early hours of the morning, when finally, something happened. The gates of the mansion parted, allowing a car to pass through. Roman recognized the driver—Natalie Noir, Julian's PA.

Julian had told him bits and pieces about the woman. He'd said that she had been an unexpected help to him, that they'd gotten off to a rough start, but she'd turned out to be quite a good friend. Julian had still not dared to trust her with the secret of their plan, but now she knew, and she didn't seem to have betrayed them.

Roman took a split second decision. His mate was probably sleeping. His emotions had become more muted in the past few hours, and it was really just stubbornness and not-knowing that kept Roman there. But Natalie... She could give him the answers he sought.

With that in mind, Roman followed the human woman. He caught up with her at a traffic light and knocked on her window, smiling like this was the most natural thing in the world.

To her credit, Natalie only jumped a little. She took a couple of deep breaths, and then opened the car door to let him in—fortunate since the other drivers currently engaged in traffic hadn't been too happy about Roman's choice of approach.

"How is he?" Roman asked as she started the car once again.

"Fine. You were lucky I was the one who found you. I made up that he had been masturbating when the alarms sounded and that was why he hadn't come out like everyone else. Given all the... evidence, it was believable, and everyone was too embarrassed to look into it further."

Roman had to admire the fact that she could say all that with such a straight face. He was also very grateful, since she was correct in that he'd made quite a mess. "I owe you a great debt," he said. "You're right. We were lucky. Thank you."

The human woman briefly threw a glance his way before focusing on the road once again. "Don't thank me. Just be more careful from now on."

"I will," Roman promised, letting out a deep sigh. "I realize now that what I did was rash.
